چکیده

As we observed in [3], one can also interpret the sums S(α;β) as special cases of the correlation sums arising in our work on algebraic twists of modular forms, and we also noted that our more general results and techniques had, as special case, this theorem of Birch and Bombieri. Very recently, Y. Zhang [12, Lemma 12] made a crucial use of this estimate in his work on bounded gaps between primes. In view of this renewed interest, we spell out the argument of [3] for this special case, and make it more precise. This gives a conceptual proof of the result which is quite short, but which depends on two deep results of Deligne: the general form of the Riemann Hypothesis over finite fields [2], and the construction of Kloosterman sheaves (explained and studied by Katz in [8]). Proposition 2. For any prime p and any α, β ∈ Fp , we have |S(α, β)| 6 8p.

Weyl Sums for Quadratic Roots

The most powerful methods for handling these sums exploit the modern theory of automorphic forms; see [DFI1] for spectral aspects and [DIT] for more arithmetical connections. The sum (1.1) has only a few terms, bounded by the divisor function, so there is not much room for cancellation, but for applications there is a lot of interest in bounds for sums of these as the modulus c varies, say (1.2...

New Bounds for Automorphic L-functions

This dissertation contributes to the analytic theory of automorphic L-functions. We prove an approximate functional equation for the central value of the L-series attached to an irreducible cuspidal automorphic representation π of GLm over a number field. The approximation involves a smooth truncation of the Dirichlet series L(s, π) and L(s, π̃) after about √ C terms, where C denotes the analyti...

On RSA moduli with almost half of the bits prescribed

We show that using character sum estimates due to H. Iwaniec leads to an improvement of recent results about the distribution and finding RSA moduli M = pl, where p and l are primes, with prescribed bit patterns. We are now able to specify about n bits instead of about n/2 bits as in the previous work. We also show that the same result of H. Iwaniec can be used to obtain an unconditional versio...

Rankin-selberg L-functions in the Level Aspect

In this paper we calculate the asymptotics of various moments of the central values of Rankin-Selberg convolution L-functions of large level, thus generalizing the results and methods of W. Duke, J. Friedlander, and H. Iwaniec and of the authors. Consequences include convexity-breaking bounds, nonvanishing of a positive proportion of central values, and linear independence results for certain H...
